The English-Speaking Union (ESU)

The winner and runner-up of the National final wil participate as representatives of Belgium to the English Speaking Union International SPeaking Competition (ISPC).

This competition will take place in London from May 14th until May 19th, 2012 (included). The topic for this competition is : 'The Head or the Heart?'. Participants must be present all six days.

Competitiors will meet and make friends with their fellow competitiors from the different countries taking part, as well as experiencing London and practising public speaking and debating. The programme will include :

  • a trip to the theatre and the Houses of Parliament
  • free time to explore London
  • a preliminary Public Speaking skills workshop on Tuesday
  • an extended debating workshop on Wednesday involving the formation of a mock Parliament where newly created ‘political parties’ will try to resolve a problem of national importance
  • preliminary heats of the competition on the Thursday morning
  • the Semi-final on Friday morning, to be held at Darthmouth House
  • the Grand Final on Friday afternoon, to be held at the Headquarters of HSBC, Canary Wharf

Bed and breakfast accommodation at the President Hotel in Central London will be available.

The English-Speaking Union has active representation in over 60 countries. Most of these countries run programmes to encourage the effective use of English as means of international communication, as well as a variety of current affairs and cultural activities aimed at improving international understanding.
